Lotto cash is heaven-sent for cathedrals

Jan 31 2006

TWO cathedrals' prayers have been answered by grants totalling £46,000.

English Heritage announced on Thursday it was awarding a grant of £26,000 to Southwark Cathedral to replace seven fire doors in the tower.

St George's RC Cathedral in Lambeth Road will get £20,000 for roof repairs.

Canon James Cronin of St George's said: "Thanks to the support of English Heritage we are able to maintain a historic building to a higher standard than our own resources would allow and we can focus better on our mission for which purpose this significant building came to be built in the first place."

The money comes from the charity's cathedral grants scheme set up in 1991 to help repair some of the country's most historic buildings.

Since then £41.8million has been spent on the work.
