'Teenager's silence at Damilola murder scene'

Feb 3 2006

A YOUTH accused of killing Damilola Taylor stood next to grieving relatives during a visit to the murder scene, the Old Bailey heard.

The then 13-year-old walked up to the balcony where Damilola, 10, had collapsed after being stabbed in the leg two days earlier.

Police in the area described him as "unusually quiet" while he stayed at the block of flats on the North Peckham Estate for several minutes. PC

Grant Gable told the court he recognised the 13-year-old - one of two brothers now on trial for the murder - in a group with two other youths. The three youths returned a few minutes later at the same time as some of Damilola's relatives, the Old Bailey heard.

They followed relatives up the stairs and joined them on the balcony, said PC Gable. The 13-year-old then left, talking on his mobile phone again, the court heard.
